This year I have explored the Hallel a bit, looking at each Psalm in turn and also some commentaries on them.
Here’s some of the things I’ve discovered:
1 The name The Hallel
The word at the beginning of Psalm 113 is translated in most Bibles as:
Praise the Lord!
You won’t be surprised to hear that the Hebrew word is hallelujah. However, what I found interesting is that it’s two Hebrew words hallu, meaning praise, and Yah meaning Lord. Yah, is the first half of the word Yahweh, meaning Lord.
This is probably why this collection of five psalms is called the Hallel.
Here’s some interesting slides about the word hallel
Why not read or listen to the whole of the hallel?
You could choose a different version of the Bible to your usual. Here is the Hallel on Biblegateway in a variety of versions (there are loads more to choose from)
