All about Roots Pack
These cards have been created as a spiritual care screening, assessment and intervention tool for use with young people in hospital.
They are perfect for use by chaplains with young people aged 11+.
Patients may have unmet spiritual needs they they are unaware of. These cards can assist the patient to reveal hidden roots that help them to reconnect with what is important to them.
There are 51 open-ended questions designed to enable the patient to reflect on a deeper level and for the Chaplain to learn more about what is going on under the surface and what is more important in the young person’s life.
Chaplains should help the patient explore using an asset based approach: looking for the strengths, talents and resources that the patient naturally has.
The packs contains 51 question cards, each carefully crafted by the Birmingham Children’s Hospital Chaplaincy Team.
There are three types of questions, each clearly colour coded:
Green = lifting and soothing spirits (easier questions)
Blue = handle with care (more difficult questions)
Purple = exploring connections (questions about faith, hope and beyond)
Top Tips:
- Use the cards for spiritual care screening, assessment and interventions.
- Use questions as conversation starters; don’t work through them systematically.
- Try to use a balance of different colour cards.
- Ask the patient if they would like to choose 6-10 cards or pick randomly.
- Build a safe space where it’s ok to not answer a question.
- Be open to the patient adapting questions or choosing an alternative question.
