Nativity Art Journal – Pack of 10

This pack of 10 A5 journals gives you and your friends a simple but meaningful way to reflect on the Christmas story through four pieces of art, one for each week in Advent if you’d like to use it then.

Each piece of art offers a new perspective on the familiar story, and you are encouraged to really look at it, noticing all the details before using the open-ended questions to help guide your thinking or chatting about the picture and your response to it. There is lots of space to write your thoughts, ideas, reflections and questions plus a whole page for you to create a visual response too, maybe your own art, photo or picture of a model you’ve made.

There are also QR codes offering you more: an audio version of that part of the Nativity story and a link to learning more about the piece of art and the painter.

How you use the journal is up to you; it’s designed to work for any one from about age 6+, on their own or in a group. There’s a discount on bulk orders so you could order some for your friends and do it together, perhaps face to face or sharing your reflections in a Whatsapp group.

The four paintings in the journal are:

1. The Annunciation by Henry Ossawa Tanner – a beautiful painting of the angel coming to Mary posed by a Palestinian girl in her home
2. Nativity by Brian Kershisnik – a stunning piece depicting hundreds of angels looking on at the birth of Jesus – includes a dog and her pups!
3. Seeing Shepherds by Daniel Bonnell – a dramatic piece with lots of movement and joy
4. The Magi Journeying by James Tissot – a different perspective on the wise men and their camel train crossing desserts

Victoria has created this resource after many years using nativity art as part of children’s groups and all-age services to help people reflect on the Christmas story.
